NEUTROGENA | LIGHT THERAPY ACNE MASK | NEW IN CANADA

* I received the Neutrogena Light Therapy Mask in exchange for review. This is no way affects my review and all thoughts are my own.

Thanks to Neutrogena's latest product launch, we now all have the opportunity to try light therapy for our skin. LED light technology is well known for treating acne, however, it can often be expensive and time consuming. The new Light Therapy Acne Mask makes this all so much easier for those of us who want a different treatment for blemishes and breakouts.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

First off, let me explain how the mask actually works. Once turned on, the mask will emit blue and red light which in turn work to combat two of the major factors that contribute to acne: bacteria and inflammation. The blue light emits wavelengths that kills the bacteria (called P.acnes) that is a main cause of acne. The blue light causes the bacteria cells to damage their own cell membranes, causing them to self-destruct.

Another key element of acne is inflammation, which leads to redness and swelling. The red LED lights works to reduce inflammation, which in turn decreases the pore clogging factor that contributes to acne.

KEY DETAILS

This mask is powered by light, which is both effective and gentle. The mask itself weighs less than a pound, and is supported on the face by a sunglasses-style frame. The mask has a slightly conical shape and a reflective surface which enhances the reflection of light onto the skin. There are also amber coloured plastic lenses which help to minimize glare during the treatment should you need to open your eyes.

The mask comes with one activator, which is the remote control that enables the mask to turn on. It includes four AA batteries, and will last for 30 treatments. Afterwards, you will need to purchase a new activator for additional treatments, but the mask can be re-used again and again. The treatment itself is 10 minutes long, and the mask will shut off automatically when the 10 minutes are up.

The mask is recommended for daily use, and as such, should last you a month before you need to purchase a new activator. As I only have the occasional breakout here and there, I haven't found myself using this every day. Instead, I've been using it 2-3 times a week as a regular skin maintenance.

For myself, I found the LED lights to be mild, and I could even open my eyes during the treatment to do things, although most of the time, I just preferred to lay down for the ten minutes, close my eyes, and listen to some music. After the treatment, my vision will actually be kind of "green", which is just from the bright lights. I would however, wait a few minutes before looking at your skin in the mirror because as we know, green cancels out redness, and you don't want the results to be skewed because of your vision.

Overall, I did enjoy the Light Therapy Acne Mask from Neutrogena. I found that after a few treatments, my skin is less bumpy, and any breakouts that I've had have gotten mildly better. I can't say much for my existing acne scars, although this product is meant to target immediate acne, and so it may not work for those that have extreme acne and/old scarring.

The Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask will be available in Canada in September 2017. The mask and activator will be sold together for $45.99-$49.00 CAD, while each individual activator will be sold for $19.99-$21.99 CAD.
